The Checkout Experience and Today’s Shopper
Even though the first bar code scan in a retail store took place over 40 years ago, many people still active in the retail industry remember when bar code scanning at the checkout was a novelty; not the norm it is today. Given the $20,000 price tag of the first grocery store checkout scanner – about $93,000 in today’s dollar – the early technology adopters were truly committed. Although some naysayers probably thought they should have been committed.
Since then, and especially in the last few years, other technologies have been developed and adapted to improve the retail checkout. These developments are getting more attention today because Retailers are focused on the importance of an improved in-store shopping experience for their customers. They are working to keep the in-store experience valuable and relevant as they compete with the online alternatives consumers have at their fingertips.
Introducing The New Zebra EM220II
The growing adoption of smartphones and tablets around the globe is creating an increasing need for enterprise users to communicate and interact with Zebra printers—especially Zebra mobile printers—using the latest mobile technology. In response to this need, Zebra is announcing the next generation EM 220 mobile receipt printer—the EM220II.
The new EM220II supports Bluetooth and Wireless LAN connectivity to Apple, Android and Windows devices using Zebra’s extensive range of printer drivers and Software Development Kits (SDKs). In addition to the recently announced iMZ220 and iMZ320, the EM220II is Zebra’s second mobile printer product line to have the ‘Made for iPod, iPhone, iPad’ (MFi) certification.
Building on the positive attributes of the predecessor EM 220 product, the next generation EM220II provides the same small, pocket-sized convenience but at a more affordable price. This will be Zebra’s smallest, most affordable smartphone- and tablet-compatible printer to date.
Improve and Expand Your Scanning Capabilities with Motorola’s LI2208
Scanning barcodes has become such a standard and integrated part of many businesses it is easy to think that all scanners are essentially the same. While this may have been more true in the past with traditional laser scanners, recent advances in imaging technologies have brought expanded capabilities to scanners without increases in costs.
The same type of hardware that is being used for cameras in smartphones and tablets is also being used to make better barcode scanners. These new scanner types are called imagers since they are essentially capturing a picture of the barcode and then decoding it. Historically, imagers have been quite a bit more costly than a standard laser scanner but with new units like the Motorola LI2208, we now have imaging scanners at the same cost as a laser scanner.
So what exactly are the advantages of moving to an imager based scanner exactly?
