Securing Your Operation by Switching to Android Powered Devices

Posted December 9, 2021

Windows OS devices are reaching the end of their life cycle. This means Microsoft will no longer be providing technical support for security threats, bug fixes or address any other potential problems. Without any future updates, specifically security updates, it creates an opportunity for malicious actors.

Thankfully Android OS systems have emerged as the leading replacement for these now out-of-date devices. Devices like Zebra’s MC930B-GSEDG4NA Mobile Handheld Computer don’t just offer upgraded durability and functionality from existing tools, they offer Android’s security from external threats.

The Danger Facing Your Facility with Windows OS

Going without security updates, warehouses that continue to use Windows OS systems will be exposed to an ever-growing list of threats and vulnerabilities. Many of the older Windows OS devices are already unprepared for the security challenges of today. As hackers discover and begin to exploit deficiencies, companies using these systems could face serious production problems. Devices may stop working or you may have your data stolen, either of which would impact your company’s operational performance and bottom line.  Don’t wait until your system is breached!

Android Security Assurance

For years now, Android has deployed a steady stream of security enhancements, such as NSA “Security Enhanced” features, per-users VPN, and Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR).

Android continues to supply regular security updates and patches more rapidly than any other operating system, including updates to Zebra devices. Android OS devices boast plentiful built-in security features that include data security, app security, and device security.

Secure Your Operations Today

Switching from Windows OS devices to Android can be simple when you partner with Barcodes, Inc. Our team members are experienced experts at migrating operations to the next advancement in technology.

If you are ready to start protecting your team, reach out to us online or give us a call at 1-800-351-9962! You will be amazed at how seamless the switch can be with the right partner.

PAX POS Cyberattacks: Are Your Payment Terminals Compromised?

Posted November 10, 2021

pax pos cyberattacks payment terminals compromised fbi investigation

First reported by WOKV.com, agents with the FBI and DHS raided the Florida warehouse of PAX Technology. The point of sale technology giant is linked to reports of possible cyberattacks on U.S. and E.U. organizations where the technology is used.

Along with ongoing global computer chip shortages, the timing of the investigation is particularly concerning for retailers and payment processing companies preparing for the holiday season.

FBI Raids PAX, Where POS Devices Are Potentially Compromised

KrebsOnSecurity offered further detail, saying they “heard from a trusted source that the FBI began investigating PAX after a major U.S. payment processor started asking questions about unusual network packets originating from the company’s payment terminals.”

The source revealed that the PAX terminals were being used both as a central location for malicious files (also known as malware “droppers”). This allows payment technology to act as a staging ground for large-scale cyberattacks focused on collecting information such as consumer credit card data.

“FBI and MI5 are conducting an intensive investigation into PAX,” the source said. “A major US payment processor began asking questions about network packets originating from PAX terminals and were not given any good answers.”

pax pos cyberattack payment terminals fbi investigation

Major financial providers (including FIS Worldpay as reported by Bloomberg) have already begun pulling PAX terminals from their payment infrastructure.

FIS Worldpay confirmed that it no longer deploys PAX point-of-sale devices “because it did not receive satisfactory answers from PAX regarding its POS devices connecting to websites not listed in their supplied documentation.”

“While we have no evidence that data running through PAX POS devices has been compromised, we have been working directly with clients to replace those devices with other options at no cost to them and with as little disruption to their business as possible,” FIS Worldpay states. “The spokesperson said fewer than 5% of Worldpay clients currently use PAX point-of-sale devices.”

While specific details about the strange network activity that prompted federal investigators are unknown, the investigation remains active and ongoing.

It’s worth noting that POS terminals and the technology that supports them are often a primary target for malware and criminal attacks.

It is not uncommon for payment terminals to be compromised remotely by malicious software and made to collect and transmit stolen information. Notable point of sale breaches include Heartland Payment Systems (100 million payment cards affected in 2008) as well as the Target and Home Depot thefts of roughly another 100 million credit cards in 2014.

PAX Technology’s Official Response to Cyberattacks

The Shenzhen-based company is quoted in Reuters with the following statement:

“As far as the board is aware … there has neither been any reported cyberattack incidents nor cyber attack complaints, including any breach of security protocols, against PAX products and services anywhere in the world.”

PAX’s statement to the stock exchange in Hong Kong as well as a press release on the company’s blog provide further perspective. Trading of the company’s shares resumed on November 1 after a temporary halt.

At Barcodes, Inc., cybersecurity is our primary concern when we procure and deploy POS technology. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions or if you’re interested in replacing your PAX technology.

How the Updated CR7020 Protective Case Helps Mobile Devices Thrive

Posted November 3, 2021

https://codecorp.com/products/cr7000-series

This past August, Code Corporation launched the disinfectant ready CR7010 battery backup case. Designed for the mobile healthcare workforce, the case doubles the battery life of iPhones and allows for full clinical sanitization protocols without causing device damage.

Now, the updated CR7020 protective case offers several improvements over the CR7010, notably its compatibility with the latest iPhone models and sizes.

Unlike most consumer-grade cases, the CR7000 series protective cases hold iPhones in a full enclosure for maximum protection. For most healthcare and other industry segments around the world such as retail and logistics, mobile scanning is extremely convenient, familiar for users, and helps improve patientcare and customer service alike.

Jana Buchanan, Senior Product Manager of Hardware for Code Corporation, had additional comments. ”We are excited about expanding our mobile device product line to include options for additional iPhone sizes.  This new product line allows us to support our customers with more options, more sizes, more flexibility.”

Mobile device barcode scanning delivers expanded efficiency for point-of-care, point-of-sale and logistics teams and extending the durability and longevity of a device helps cut costs and enhance productivity. Is there a downside to mobility?

Mobile devices can create unintended risks for patients, customers, and employees. Because mobile devices are handled by multiple employees to scan and manage sales and inventory, they also need to be able to withstand disinfection protocols and occasional drops. The CR7020 provides protection for these and other scenarios, keeping employees and devices safe.

The CR7020 case, like previous models, offers bi-directional data pass-through and an easily swappable, external battery power that more than doubles the life of an iPhone. Its flexible battery charging system includes multiple workspace preset options, which can be configured exactly how you need.

At a glance, the case indicates the battery’s charge status. In busy environments, the last thing you need is a team member guessing how much charge is left in a device. This, and many other features, make the CR7020 case a true standout for iPhone productivity.

CR7020 Protective Case Features

  • Bi-directional data pass-through
  • 5 or 10-bay battery chargers with configurations for any workspace
  • BatteryTrakâ„¢ application provides real-time battery health, deployment dates, cycle counts, and serial numbers for individual case monitoring
  • Hot-swappable 2,700 mAh external battery
  • Dragontrail™ screen protector
  • Secure and sealed, protects against damage as well as water and debris
  • CodeShield® Level 3 PVC-Free disinfectant-ready plastics
  • Compatible with iPhone 8 and iPhone SE (2020)
  • Code Complete service and extended warranty plans
  • Smart battery shows battery health with a visible fuel gauge
  • With iPhone, withstands multiple drops of 4’ (1.2 meters) to concrete
