POS at the LPGA

Posted May 13, 2010

Wasp QuickStore POS

A Small Business with History

For over 27 years, The Wegmans Rochester LPGA has been one of the most popular stops on the LPGA tour. It combines the world’s best golfers, the most enthusiastic crowds and many eager volunteers that join to raise funds for special causes. Disabled Children of Monroe County (DCMC), benefiting Camp Haccamo and the Sunshine Campus, uses the Wegmans Rochester LPGA as their main fund raising event. DCMC operates a store front that sells thousands of hats, shirts, shoes, and umbrellas during the week long event. The success of the event for DCMC increases every year, and the importance of correctly stocking, monitoring and reporting sales in such a short time frame increases each year as well. With this event being the main fund raiser for DCMC, “we just can’t have anything go wrong during the week” says Tim Groth, head of technology for Disabled Children of Monroe County.

The Technological Problem

“Our prior DOS based system was brutal,” states Tim Groth. “It was so difficult to use that we ended up with inaccurate data of what was sold. To add to the problem, the final inventory count must be completed before the vendors pick up their merchandise within hours after the tournament ends. The sales staff just could not keep up. By the end of the tournament they had no idea what they had sold,” Groth adds. It was obvious that help was needed in four main problem areas. First, DCMC needed a system that provided accurate inventory control and monitoring of shrinkage. Second, the system must be easy to implement and use, especially since the staff had little computer training and, in fact, were fearful of using new technology. Third, the system had to provide for quick and easy check out since there were a large number of transactions that were to be performed throughout the day. Fourth, the results had to be fast since this operation begins and ends in one week’s time! The challenge was to make the sales run as smooth as the green!

Datalogic Scanning Announces Partnership with Mobile Marketing Provider

Posted May 12, 2010

Continuing to leverage the rapidly expanding mobile commerce and marketing trends in retail, Datalogic Scanning is pleased to announce its joint marketing agreement with RocketBux, a white label mobile marketing services provider.

With over 2.4 billion active users worldwide and 10 times as many consumer access points as the wired internet, the mobile marketing industry is positioned for unprecedented growth. These statistics are not lost on retailers, payment processors or loyalty companies who are eagerly adopting services to take full advantage of this new, high-growth channel.

Datalogic Scanning and RocketBux began working together in 2008 by deploying several mobile commerce pilot programs utilizing Datalogic’s new imaging-based POS bar code scanners and RocketBux’s leading suite of mobile commerce tools, which includes bar codes that are generated by mobile phones. Datalogic Scanning selected RocketBux because their solutions are simple to use and require no special downloads or applications.

RocketBux’s bar coded products work extremely well with Datalogic’s exclusive Illumix™ Intelligent Illumination Technology, which enables retailers to quickly and easily read bar codes from mobile phones without any cashier or user intervention at the POS. They also use superior, patented bar code optimization technology with either 1D or 2D codes. Both companies agree these features are necessary to achieve the broadest adoption rate among consumers.

Honeywell’s Area-Imaging Scanners Read Drivers’ License Barcodes In Three New States

Posted May 11, 2010

Enhanced EasyDLâ„¢ software parses data on Texas, Ohio and encrypted Georgia licenses

Honeywell announced that their EasyDL software plug-in has been enhanced, enabling select area-imaging scanners to parse and decrypt bar code data found on Georgia state licenses for applications involving age verification and automatic electronic form population. Honeywell Scanning & Mobility’s area-imaging scanners now lead the AIDC industry in their ability to scan all U.S. and Canadian driver’s licenses that include PDF417 bar codes. Ohio and Texas are the latest states to include a PDF417 bar code on the back of its licenses, bringing the total number of driver’s licenses that Honeywell supports to 47 states and two Canadian provinces.

Age verification is a federal requirement for retail stores selling age-restricted items such as tobacco, liquor and gambling products. With a quick scan of a customer’s driver’s license, Honeywell’s EasyDL provides retailers with an age verification solution to ensure federal compliance is met. The solution lessens the responsibility placed on the cashier or business owner by eliminating user error associated with manually checking birthdays on identification cards.

Achieving PCI DSS v1.2 Compliance on Wireless Printers

Posted May 11, 2010

Executive Summary

The challenges of meeting Payment Card Industry (PCI) security standards and the horror stories of failing to comply continue to grow. Security breaches at several major retailers have resulted in estimated costs of as high as $1 billion per retailer. The U.S. Identity Theft Protection Act has established fines of up to $11,000 per customer record for databases breaches. In fact, 14 percent of retailers have suffered a breach and only 28 percent of retailers are fully compliant with PCI requirements, according to the Retail Systems Alert Group 2006-2007 Retail Data Security study. Since that study, retailers are taking notice, and compliance rates are steadily increasing.

Merchants who do not comply are at risk for fines, higher processing fees and even the loss of card-processing privileges. PCI implementation costs are a major concern for many businesses, even if the cost of noncompliance is potentially so much higher. Consider that the cost of new preventative measures only averages 4 percent of the total breach cost, or $180,000.1

Amid these concerns, it is easy for retailers to lose sight of both the big picture and important details. PCI compliance is a major milestone, but it is only a means to an end of having secure processes, networks, data, devices, and peripherals. If a single networked device is non-compliant, the entire network and the retail information systems behind it are all non-compliant. This is why protecting peripherals is an essential, if somewhat overlooked, component of PCI compliance.

This white paper explains how PCI Data Security Standard (DSS) version 1.2 applies to wireless peripherals and presents options for including secure wireless printers in PCI-compliant wireless networks.
