Honeywell’s Mobile Phone Mode

Posted May 10, 2016

There is a mode titled “Hand Held Scanning – Mobile Phone” that optimizes your scanner to read bar codes from mobile phones and other LED displays.  It does this in part by flickering the LEDs.  Last week a business was having trouble reading barcodes off of his laptop so we told him to turn the feature on (by scanning the barcode).  And of course he stopped having trouble.  Note that you don’t have to have this feature on when scanning barcodes off of phones/tablets.  It just helps the cause sometimes.

I wanted to know what the impact was on scanning speed when scanning regular barcodes when this feature was turned on.  So I tested it.

The results – the Xenon 1900 is a little slower (about 15%) with this feature turned on.  That sounds like a lot but the difference in speed really isn’t noticeable.  The Xenon still blows through my scanner board.

So don’t hesitate to use this feature if the application calls for it – even if other barcodes are being scanned that aren’t on a phone or a computer screen.

Honeywell Offers Shielded Illumination with Presentation Scanners

Posted May 4, 2016

Shielded Illumination. What is it? In short, it’s a Honeywell-designed feature that minimizes the light emitted from a scanner preventing operators and customers from getting their eyes zapped by the barcode scanner. It significantly reduces the intense illumination often associated with imaging-based scanners.

Is it important? Yes! It allows retailers to manage their point of sale operations quickly, efficiently, and without any customer complaints.

White Paper: Bluetooth Barcode Scanners

Posted March 15, 2016

What are they?

Barcode scanners come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and connection types. In the past, most businesses would utilize a corded barcode scanner that would connect to a PC computer via a USB, Serial, or PS/2 Keyboard Wedge interface. Now, with the world migrating towards a mobile, or cordless, platform, Bluetooth is becoming more prevalent in the data capture industry. Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communication standard that interconnects electronic devices. Similarly, Bluetooth Barcode Scanners are offered in a handheld cordless form factor, and communicate to their respective base/cradle or directly to a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet, via Bluetooth. After a huge demand from small and medium-sized business owners to incorporate iPads, iPhones, Galaxy Tabs, and other smartphone or tablet devices into their workforce management workflow, Honeywell invested extensive time and resources into building barcode scanners that are equipped with Bluetooth technology in order to pair them with consumer mobile devices. Now, business owners have the ability to manage inventory or track assets at the tip of their hands by pairing a Bluetooth barcode scanner with their smartphone or tablet.

Plant Access Grows Its Competitive Edge with Honeywell RFID Solutions

Posted February 12, 2016

Plant Access is a specialised logistics services provider, catering for the green life industry. Plant Access provides a highly efficient service utilising a unique, innovative steel stillage design used to pick, crossdock and deliver nursery plants to Bunnings Warehouse locations across Victoria and South Australia.

Weeding out manual processes

Plant Access manages the orders and provides the steel stillages that are used to transport plant products from over 67 nursery supplier sites to Bunnings stores across Victoria and South Australia. Shipments from different suppliers are consolidated at the Plant Access cross dock facility before orders are transported to Bunnings locations and plants are sold to consumers direct out of the steel stillages.

At any one time, Plant Access has thousands of re-usable steel stillages spread across hundreds of sites throughout the supply chain. Knowing the location of all these stillages and the status of an order was a serious challenge for Plant Access under a legacy paper-based manual ordering system.

A new automated tracking system was necessary to capture real-time data from nursery supplier sites, the Plant Access cross dock logistics facility and the Bunnings stores, in order for Plant Access to have an accurate and instant visibility of their stillage assets and the products they were transporting.
