Label Adhesive Breakdown

Label come in many sizes, shapes and materials.  Labels also have several options of adhesives. Although size and material is important, the type of adhesive a label contains can be critical to the success of the label in the desired application. Consider the following choices when selecting the proper label:

  • Removable Labels: These labels are designed to be removed from the surface they are applied to. The labels will adhere to most dry, clean surfaces. The benefit of this label is that the label can be completely removed from the surface without damage to the surface or excess adhesive residue/ label flaking during the removal process.
  • Permanent Labels: These labels are designed to be non-removable. Ideal for application where the label needs to withstand a long amount of time on a surface and where the label cannot be removed with out being damaged. Shipping a box, warehouse signage or asset tracking are a few applications where a label with a permanent adhesive would work best.
  • High-Tack Labels: These labels are designed to also be non-removable. However, the difference is that these labels can withstand higher levels of abrasion, outdoor environments (water and UV resistant) and locations where the label may come in contact with chemicals.
  • All-Temp Labels: These labels can be used in several different applications where the labels may be moved from a hot to cold location. Moving inventory from a cold climate to a hot climate is an ideal application for this type of label. These labels are not intended for extremely high temperature applications.
  • High-Temp Labels: These labels are designed to be used in environments or applications that may expose the label to extremely high temperatures.

In fact, the advantages of thermal over laser are so compelling that the only reason to continue using laser printers for labeling must be habit. Before enumerating the advantages of thermal printing technology over laser, it will be useful to consider the use of laser printers for labeling.

Laser Printing Labeling: History and Concerns

Laser printers have long been used in label printing applications, chiefly because a base of laser printers are usually already installed—primarily for forms, letters, and other narrative communications and documentation. Their multi-function capability made it relatively easy to adopt the laser printer hardware for printing labels. Since adoption was easy, a thorough examination of the technology’s appropriateness was rarely undertaken. Parameters such as operating costs, total cost of ownership, materials and energy usage, ergonomics, and other relevant factors were simply not considered in the label printing context.

After laser label printing applications became the de facto standard, users began to see the shortcomings of using laser printers for this function. While many are now demanding better label printing solutions, they are challenged by inertia in the form of a huge installed base of laser printers.

Healthcare Unique Device Identification (UDI) Labeling

The FDA’s developing UDI (Unique Device Identification) standard highlights the capacity of auto-ID technologies to enable significant improvements in patient safety. Country of Origin Labeling Solution

In 2008, the USDA Country of Origin requirements expanded in scope. By March 31, 2009, food manufacturers and distributors need to clearly identify national origin for many products and provide corresponding recordkeeping documents with each shipment. Mishaps in this process can cost time, money, and even valued customers. Users can now streamline, error-proof, and cost reduce this process with Intermec’s Country of Origin Labeling solution.

The Challenge

Meeting the Country of Origin requirement commonly requires multiple steps: A thermal printer images the national origin information on a shipping label, meeting the identification portion of the standard. A separate printer, typically dot matrix or laser, creates the packing slip to meet recordkeeping requirements; this slip is usually folded multiple times and inserted into a packing slip sleeve. Finally, this sleeve is manually matched to the corresponding carton (introducing potential for error) and adhered for shipment.
